List coloring triangle-free planar graphs

This paper proves the following result. Assume $G$ is a triangle-free planar graph, $X$ is an independent set of $G$. If $L$ is a list assignment of $G$ such that $\text{◂=▸}|L\left(v\right)|=4$ for each vertex $\text{◂+▸}v\in V\left(G\right)-X$ and $\text{◂=▸}|L\left(v\right)|=3$ for each vertex $v\in X$, then $G$ is $L$-colorable.     

Subshifts on Infinite Alphabets and Their Entropy

We analyze symbolic dynamics to infinite alphabets by endowing the alphabet with the cofinite topology. The topological entropy is shown to be equal to the supremum of the growth rate of the complexity function with respect to finite subalphabets. For the case of topological Markov chains induced by countably infinite graphs, our approach yields the same entropy as the approach of Gurevich We give formulae for the entropy of countable topological Markov chains in terms of the spectral radius in l2.     

On coloring numbers of graph powers

The weak $r$-coloring numbers ${\mathrm{wcol}}_r\left(G\right)$ of a graph $G$ were introduced by the first two authors as a generalization of the usual coloring number $\mathrm{col}\left(G\right)$, and have since found interesting theoretical and algorithmic applications. This has motivated researchers to establish strong bounds on these parameters for various classes of graphs.Let $G^p$ denote the $p$th power of $G$. We show that, all integers $p>0$ and $\Delta \ge 3$ and graphs $G$ with $\Delta \left(G\right)\le \Delta$ satisfy $\mathrm{col}\left(G^p\right)\in O\left(p\cdot {\mathrm{wcol}}_{\lceil p∕2\rceil }\left(G\right){(\Delta -1)}^{\lfloor p∕2\rfloor }\right)$; for fixed tree width or fixed genus the ratio between this upper bound and worst case lower bounds is polynomial in $p$. For the square of graphs $G$, we also show that, if the maximum average degree $2k-2<\mathrm{mad}\left(G\right)\le 2k$, then $\mathrm{col}\left(G^2\right)\le (2k-1)\Delta \left(G\right)+2k+1$.

Vertex partitions of (C3,C4,C6)-free planar graphs

A graph is $(k_1,k_2)$-colorable if it admits a vertex partition into a graph with maximum degree at most $k_1$ and a graph with maximum degree at most $k_2$. We show that every $(C_3,C_4,C_6)$-free planar graph is $(0,6)$-colorable. We also show that deciding whether a $(C_3,C_4,C_6)$-free planar graph is $(0,3)$-colorable is NP-complete.     

The impact of loops on the game of cops and robbers on graphs

In the game of cops and robbers on graphs, the cops and the robber are allowed to pass their turn if they are located on a looped vertex. This paper explores the effect of loops on the cop number and the capture time. We provide examples of graphs where the cop number almost doubles when the loops are removed, graphs where the cop number decreases when the loops are removed, graphs where the capture time is quadratic in the number of vertices and copwin graphs where the cop needs to move away from the robber in optimal play.
